Get to Know Our Inviting Senior Living Community
Sunny Vista Senior Living Community has been serving Colorado Springs for over a century. Originally founded as a tuberculosis sanatorium, it has grown into three interconnected neighborhoods—offering independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and short-term rehabilitation.
Nestled near historic downtown Colorado Springs with stunning views of Pikes Peak, Sunny Vista’s rich history is rooted in compassion and purpose. As a mission-driven, non-profit organization, we prioritize people and community over profits. This means that all decisions are guided by a genuine desire to enhance the well-being of our residents.
Sunny Vista strives to make every resident feel valued, supported, and truly at home.
Our Vision

From The Johnson Center to Someren Glen

Sunny Vista's Long History of Caring
Sunny Vista’s legacy dates back to 1911 when it was founded as Sunnyrest Sanatorium, originally dedicated to treating tuberculosis patients. Founded with an endowment from Marjorie Palmer Watt, daughter of Colorado Springs’ founder General William Palmer, the institution was managed by five Sisters of the Kaiserwerth Deaconesses. Patients, mainly from the community, paid $8 per week if they could afford it, with additional funds raised locally.
In early 2004, the Board of Directors responded to the ever-changing needs of the community and began plans for a state-of-the-art facility. The decision was made to change the name from Sunnyrest Sanatorium to The Living Center at Sunny Vista and the 116-private-room community now provides state-of-the-art skilled nursing care and rehabilitation services to Colorado Springs.
In 2018, The Retreat at Sunny Vista opened and is the newest addition to our campus, offering both assisted living and specialized memory care services.
Today, Sunny Vista’s continuing care campus includes three distinct communities: The Retreat, The Living Center, and The Villa—each dedicated to meeting the unique needs of older adults at every stage of aging.
In the following years, the campus expanded services to offer the continuum of care we are known for today. Yet, not everyone realized the two buildings were really part of one neighborhood, one community, and one continuum of support.
In 2013, CLC repositioned the campus under one identifying name, Someren Glen, so that residents, families, and the greater area would come to know the promise of this community built upon the legacy of The Johnson Center.
The Non-Profit Difference

The Non-Profit Difference
As non-profit organization, Sunny Vista committed to our mission to provide the care, support, and spaces for seniors to live life on their own terms. This mission guides all decision making across the organization.
Rather than being accountable to shareholders, we are accountable to an all-volunteer board of directors. CLC prioritizes resident and team member well-being above all else, and is not required to maximize profits in the interest of shareholders as for-profit companies are.
Sunny Vista and CLC’s profits are managed for the future growth of our organization to ensure we are able to sustain and grow our collective mission.
Our Culture of Citizenship
Our Culture of Citizenship
The Citizenship Model, created by our parent organization, Christian Living Communities, is an age-positive, empowerment approach rooted in the belief that each individual, at every age and level of abilities, has gifts, passions, talents, and experience that can make the community stronger and better. When people view themselves as active citizens in their communities, there is influence, meaning, autonomy, belonging and an overall sense of well-being.

At the heart of Sunny Vista are the residents, more than just community members—they are active participants who support one another and contribute to the vibrant spirit of daily life. Through their involvement in activities and meaning connections, they help create a rich and caring community.
We believe this approach will revolutionize aging services, moving beyond traditional cultures that focus on a declinist view of aging to purpose-filled cultures of shared responsibility, to citizenship.
Residents, team members, family members, and our vendor partners are all citizens, who together, weave a beautiful and vibrant tapestry of living.
